Meet Alex Johnson: 13 Years on the Decks, Newcastle to Lewisham
Alex has been DJing around Newcastle for 13 years, and in recent years has become part of both Home Run and is a main resident at the amazing Heart of Soul, Lewisham.
We caught up with him ahead of the weekender to talk house renovations, Joni Feldman, and the night Daryl Howard had 150 people singing every word.
Thanks for agreeing to chat with us. How's it going? What have you been up to lately?
Hi all from The Home Run Soul Club team. Over the past few months, myself and my fiancée recently moved into our first house together, so a lot of our time has gone into the renovation.
When did you start DJing?
I began DJing around 13 years ago, mainly around the various bars and clubs of my home town, Newcastle upon Tyne, which I continue to do on a weekly basis. In recent years I've been very privileged to become part of an amazing collective, Heart of Soul, Lewisham.
Other than collecting records, what else are you into?
A lot of time outside of collecting records is spent with my fiancée and our two small dogs, Juno and Eevee. Renovating the new house at the moment is taking up a lot of our time too.
What are you looking forward to most about coming to Manchester?
Catching up with our soul mates. A lot of our best friends on the soul scene either always come to Manchester-based weekenders, or hail directly from there.
When it comes to seeking out records, what's been your best recent find?
One of my favourite records that I recently purchased, and is on constant rotation, is Joni Feldman's Gypsy In My Soul on Fishtraks Records. One that will definitely be in my box for the weekender.
What has been your most memorable night as a DJ or a punter?
Recently the Heart of Soul team managed to get Daryl Howard from the Nu-Rons. He performed an incredible set for the 3rd Anniversary of Heart of Soul, Lewisham. It's probably one of the most memorable moments I've ever witnessed — around 150 people at the Dojo, singing all the words to "All Of My Life" with Daryl. That moment will stay with me forever.
See you in Manchester, Alex!
