Meet Jordan Wilson: Room at The Top DJ and Promoter, Chasing Detroit Acetates

Jordan's been obsessing over soul records since he was 14, DJing properly since his early twenties, and turns 30 this August. These days he's splitting his time between local gigs, promoting Room at The Top, family life, and planning his first ever record-buying trip to the States.

We caught up with him ahead of the weekender to talk unreleased Detroit acetates, genealogy research, and why going home to the 100 Club felt exactly like that.

Thanks for agreeing to chat with us. How's it going? What have you been up to lately?

All good - juggling the usual, family life, and DJing here and there. Mostly local gigs these days, which I'm really enjoying, plus promoting our Room at The Top events, spending more time with the family, and planning my first trip to the States in October. So yeah, it's been a little busy, ha!

Nice. What's the plan — family holiday or digging for DJ treasure?

Treasure. I can't wait! Taking in a few cities and major record fairs.

When did you start DJing?

I started properly DJing in my early twenties, but I've been collecting and obsessing over soul records since I was a teenager. I first got into the soul scene at 14, and I turn 30 this August.

Other than collecting records, what else are you into?

I'm massively into genealogy research. I've found a real passion for helping people discover information about their family, especially those who don't know much about their past for whatever circumstances. I've found it incredibly rewarding.

What are you looking forward to most about coming to Manchester?

Manchester is a proper melting pot — I love it! Just a different kind of energy you don't find anywhere else. I can't wait for the weekender, the range of music and DJs on offer is exciting. And it'll be brilliant having some of our RATT regulars in attendance on home ground.

When it comes to seeking out records, what's been your best recent find?

I'm really enjoying spinning a brilliant, previously unreleased track by The Tomangoes called True, True Loving. It's a raw, unfinished Detroit mid-tempo mover that I pulled straight from the original Pioneer Studio master tapes — perfect for the Manchester weekender. I've also been loving Ivy Jo Hunter's I Can Feel the Pain recently.

What has been your most memorable night as a DJ or a punter?

Heading down to the 100 Club in London after a break from the scene while we welcomed our first born. It just felt like going home again, totally lost in the music to Butch's amazing, exclusive sounds. Another big memory is DJing at the 100 Club when loads of my closest mates from around the country came to support. One of those proper wholesome nights, full of great memories.
