How long have you been collecting?
I’d asked for a set of Numark turntables one Christmas/Birthday and had already started buying dance records from HMV (although I never really mastered the art of mixing). Then a few years later my Dad took me to Prestwich and I was hooked… especially as there was no mixing involved!
Do you remember your first buy?
I can’t really remember the first soul record that I bought! Early on, all I really remember is buying lots of dance stuff at HMV.
What’s your favourite record in your box?
Soul Bros Inc – Pyramid on Golden Eye Label is my all time favourite and it’s always in the box. I know it can be a bit of a marmite record but I have always loved it and just had to get a copy, a few years ago I was lucky enough to do so.
Which record do you regret selling the most?
Dottie & Millie – Talkin About My Baby on Topper. It was one of them needs musts situations and have regretted it ever since, a really clean copy as well and I loved both sides. I’ll get a replacement one day!
What’s your fave all time soul club?
Rugby, as it was the first niter that I ever attended. I love the way the promoters Dean and Sian aren’t afraid to bring in fresh new DJs as well as young DJs into the lineup and how they don’t just invite the same guys along all the time. This means you never really know what you are going to get and in the same night you can hear oldies, popcorn, crossover, garage and even funky house! 2 rooms, a record bar and an appreciative crowd who are always up for it. Incredible!
What’s your all time want?
An ever changing and growing list but probably The Earle’s – Everybody’s Got Somebody on Tee-Ti. Then maybe a copy of William Powell – Heartache Souvenirs on Power-House Records or Eddie Parker – I’m Gone on Awake Records
